A Time-Honored Site Among Vermont Hotels And Country Inns

Experience the distinguished legacy of The Jackson House Inn & Restaurant. Originally constructed in 1890 as a private residence, this historic Vermont Inn continues to serve as an exemplary model of late Victorian architecture - one of the premier structures to be built in the Queen Anne style in Woodstock. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, its distinctive period details include superbly crafted woodwork and built-ins; beautifully laid floors executed in cherry, maple, oak, and pine; and touches of stained glass. We welcome you to become a part of the cherished tradition that has made The Jackson House a genuine favorite among Woodstock inns, catering to couples and friends looking to escape to a gentler pace. Learn more about the history of this beloved property by tracing the timeline below.
  • 1890: The Jackson House Inn & Restaurant was built by local sawmill owner Wales N. Johnson as a private residence. Built on a Georgian Plan in the Queen Anne Style, the structure is one of the finest examples of architecture, materials, and craftsmanship of its period. This house, and the Billing's Farm Manager's House - both finished in 1890 - were the first in Woodstock to be originally of the Queen Anne Style. Reports say the house was originally built for $4,000; today, it is estimated that it would cost $3 million to replace.
  • 1940: The home was purchased by Bob and Christine Jackson, who opened it as a nine-room guesthouse known as The Seven Maples - in honor of the seven maple trees that lined the front grounds. It operated as a tourist home under this name until 1982, upon the death of Robert Jackson.
  • 1983: New owners Bruce McIlveen and Jack Foster purchased the property, and began a massive 14-month renovation. Expanded to 11 rooms during this extensive restoration process, The Jackson House Inn was christened as an upscale bed and breakfast.
  • 1993: The Jackson House Inn was endorsed by the Woodstock Village Design Review Committee and named to the Historic Register. The announcement concluded a nearly five-year evaluation process, based on the architectural integrity and restoration of the house.
  • 1997: The home was restored while maintaining the authenticity of the original architecture by Juan and Gloria Florin. Modern baths and a new wing with four additional suites were added. The opening of a full-service dining restaurant changed the name to The Jackson House Inn & Restaurant.
  • 2006: Current owners Bernard and Jennifer English purchased the inn, enriching it with a wealth of collective experience in the hospitality industry. Bernard's background includes management positions with Amerimar Enterprises; Embassy Suites; AIRCOA; the Berkshire Hilton Inn in Pittsfield, MA; and Blantyre Castle in Lenox, MA - as well as affiliation with the marketing board for Westin Hotels and Resorts. Jennifer's foundation in the industry stems from management positions at Ticket to Travel in Colorado Springs, CO; The Travel School of Colorado Springs; High County Travel in Dillon and Breckenridge, CO; and Blantyre Castle in Lenox, MA. As owners, the couple has pledged not only to maintain the property's exquisite condition, but to foster a warm, friendly atmosphere - catering to couples and intimate groups looking for a relaxing New England getaway.
  • Present: This elegant inn remains one of the country's finest accommodations, with a distinguished AAA Four-Diamond rating. It has been featured in numerous publications - including Colonial Homes, Glamour, Country Inns, Gourmet, and Bon Appetit magazines.
